Coaches Corner: Round 14

Coming into this game after a strong performance and result the previous week, the group was full of confidence and excitement.

We were also clearly aware that Clifton Hill would provide a different but equally as tough challenge.

Another home game meant we had to be strong and ensure we backed up. We knew the ‘Hillmen’ would be turning up with confidence after a very strong recent track record that saw them take points off Whittlesea, Altona City and Preston Lions.

The exciting news was that recent signings Brian Summerskill and Rhys Saunders were available. However, Yuji Kin was very unlucky to come out of the squad given we now have five visa spots – knowing only four can be on the team sheet. If we are to achieve our goals going forward a strong competitive squad is imperative.

Francesco Stella came back into the starting line-up in place of Yuji, but outside of that we had an unchanged first eleven.

Overall, in wet and windy conditions on the artificial surface the boys were fantastic. A strong aggressive and committed performance saw us take the win 2 – 0. On the day we had goals from George Slefendorfas and our captain George Tsiakalakis. Great to get one from a set piece as we have done some work around those in recent sessions.

Stella had a couple of great assists but I thought Nelson, Ethan and Daniel Slovacek were brilliant. The whole team was. We also found ourselves in a position to effect the game off the bench with both Summerskill and Saunders making strong contributions when they came on – unfortunately Rhys will miss the next few weeks with a hamstring strain. Having said that, we were unlucky not to score another one or two on the day but we were happy with another clean sheet – 2nd in a row was a highlight.

This week we are motivated and ready to prepare for the visit of Yarraville. Coached well by Paul Donnelly the team is coming off a very impressive win against Whittlesea which saw them take a six nil win last week. They will be confident.

We must focus on a strong performance and hope to see many more of our long standing supporters come down.

#GeorgiesCourage is our aim.
